Religions and Worldviews
At Kennet Valley, we deliver an ambitious, knowledge-based Religious Education and World Views curriculum that aims to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about their own community and the wider world. Our RE curriculum helps pupils to develop both self-respect and respect for others; it contributes to their cultural and historical understanding at local, national and global levels. It helps them to understand global affairs. Through debate, discussion and enquiry, children at Kennet Valley learn to communicate confidently and respectfully. The children learn that diversity of belief is a feature of modern Britain and that religious discrimination is unacceptable.
By learning about the core beliefs of different faiths, children are able to see common values and beliefs.
By learning about the key stories from different faiths, children are able to identify common human values. They are able to understand cultural references and how interpretation of these stories has changed over time.
By learning about the key practices of different faiths, children are able to respect the differences between themselves and others due to an understanding of what these practices signify to a believer. The children are also able to identify cultural practices that people of no-faith may choose to take part in and consider objectively what people may gain from taking part.
By learning about people of faith, children are able to understand how faith or personal values can give one the strength to act. Additionally, the children are able to reflect on their own personal values and how their actions reflect these.
We have three major threads, based on our core values, that we revisit every year. The first is Compassion, which allows us to develop the children’s understanding of similarities and differences between faiths and world views. The second is Curiosity, where we teach about physical geography and investigate how it influences how people live. The third is Courage, which is seen when we focus on the lives of people
Finally, as a result of their learning in RE, children at Kennet Valley will know that belonging to a community with shared values benefits a person’s wellbeing.
